Lansing Women's Historical Center: Student Project Design

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

For this project, we were to choose a famous women represented in the Lansing Women's Historical Museum, and focus our building design on her and her accomplishments. I chose Mary Chase Perry Stratton. She was an amazing and talented artist who worked with ceramics, famous for her pottery--specifically, iridescent pottery. I wanted to create a building that represented strong women, like Mary Chase. I wanted it to represent powerful, confident, and graceful women who I am inspired by. I also wanted it to be as creative and colorful as Mary Stratton's ceramic work. I worked with the site to create a focal point in the center of the building, which leads down to the main museum space. This represents the radial symmetry of how most ceramic work is created from a pottery wheel, and is displayed across the project. I utilized iridescent glazing throughout the building to add variations of color and light, similar to Mary's iridescent ceramic work. I also designed the site to show the path of women who have changed the world in their own ways, each plot telling a story and there for the community's enjoyment. I wanted this space to be able to be used by the community, and to be green and beautiful for the city to use. This will both help awareness to the community about famous, inspiring women, and will hopefully inspire young girls to follow in their footsteps.
